Composting

Community Meeting

In August 2009 Northwest State purchased an A500 Rocket in-vessel, accelerated food waste composter. This new composting technology is in use at more than 30 campuses and businesses throughout the United Kingdom. In the United States, however, the only other campus using this new composting technology is St. John’s University in New York.

Presently, 20 pounds of food scraps from the campus kitchens enter the A500 composter each week, producing a steady stream of fresh compost to enrich our soils. By Fall 2011, it is expected that all food waste from the campus food service and from catering services will be used for compost.
